Excel to PDF Converter transforms your Excel spreadsheets into high-quality PDF documents with full support for formulas, charts, and cell styles. This tool uses LibreOffice Calc in headless mode on the server to render all sheets accurately, preserving print areas and page breaks. Since the conversion is triggered from your browser without uploading data locally, it offers enhanced privacy. For other document formats, try our PowerPoint to PDF or Word to PDF converters.

How to Use Excel to PDF Converter

  1. Upload your Excel file (.xlsx or .xls) using the file selector.
  2. The server processes the file with LibreOffice Calc in headless mode, rendering all sheets and elements.
  3. After conversion, download the generated PDF, which preserves your spreadsheet's layout and print settings.
  4. If needed, use related tools like Excel to CSV Converter for data extraction.

How It Works

The conversion runs on the server using LibreOffice Calc's soffice --headless --convert-to pdf command. This method supports both Office Open XML (.xlsx) and legacy Binary (.xls) formats. LibreOffice Calc renders all spreadsheet components, including formulas, charts, conditional formatting, and cell styles, into a paginated PDF that respects print area definitions, page breaks, and headers or footers.

To maintain performance and resource management, the server limits processing to two concurrent LibreOffice instances with a 90-second timeout per conversion. Uploaded files are temporarily stored in Cloudflare R2 storage with a two-hour time-to-live to ensure data privacy and automatic cleanup.

Example

Input file: sales_report.xlsx (contains multiple sheets with charts and formulas)

Output file: sales_report.pdf (multi-page PDF preserving layout, charts, and formulas rendered as static content)

Frequently Asked Questions

What Excel file formats does this converter support?

The converter supports both .xlsx (Office Open XML) and .xls (legacy Binary) formats. LibreOffice Calc handles the rendering of these formats accurately for PDF output.

Does the conversion preserve formulas and charts?

Formulas in Excel are rendered as their evaluated results in the PDF. Charts and conditional formatting are preserved visually, ensuring the PDF reflects the spreadsheet's appearance, but formulas remain static.

Is my uploaded Excel file stored or shared?

Uploaded files are temporarily stored on the server's Cloudflare R2 storage with a two-hour TTL. Files are not shared or used outside the conversion process and are automatically deleted after the TTL expires.

How long does the conversion process take?

Conversion typically completes within seconds but has a maximum timeout of 90 seconds per file, enforced to prevent server overload and ensure timely processing.

Can I convert large Excel files with many sheets?

Yes, the tool supports multi-sheet workbooks and preserves all sheets in the generated PDF. However, very large files may approach the timeout limit or resource constraints because only two LibreOffice instances run concurrently.

Is the conversion done entirely in my browser?

The conversion process is initiated from your browser, but the actual rendering runs server-side using LibreOffice Calc. This design ensures consistent PDF output while your data stays private with temporary storage.
